INI SS Medicine: DM course papers, pattern and mock tests

In INI SS you apply for one DM course, and your paper is specific to it: questions on the general and basic component of MD Medicine (or your feeder degree) plus the sub-speciality and system components of that DM. The January 2027 session CBT is on 24 October 2026: 80 questions in 90 minutes, +1 / −1/3, with 50% marks to qualify and a Stage II assessment for AIIMS and PGIMER seats.

DM courses in INI SS

INI SS has no official medical group; you apply for one specific DM course, and each institute sets its own feeder degrees. For DM Cardiology, for example, AIIMS accepts MD/DNB Medicine or Paediatrics, PGIMER MD Medicine, and JIPMER MD/DNB General Medicine, Paediatrics or Pulmonary Medicine. The DM courses we run dedicated series for are:

  • Cardiology
  • Gastroenterology / Medical Gastroenterology
  • Neurology
  • Nephrology
  • Endocrinology
  • Clinical Immunology & Rheumatology
  • Clinical Hematology
  • Medical Oncology
  • Infectious Diseases

The January 2027 prospectus lists 61 DM courses in all, including Hepatology, Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Critical Care & Sleep Medicine and Medical Genetics. The full list is in the INI SS guide.

What an INI SS DM paper tests

AIIMS sets the paper from “the General/Basic component of the qualifying educational qualification and from sub-specialty/systems/component of the specialty-course”. For a DM aspirant that means two layers in the same 80 questions:

  • General Medicine basics: the core medicine every MD graduate is expected to know, often asked through high-yield previous-session concepts.
  • Your super-speciality: the physiology, diagnostics, landmark trials and management of the DM you applied for.

That is why every Duramater INI SS medical series includes General Medicine PYQ mocks and a biostatistics mock alongside the super-speciality mocks, and most come with a subject PYQ bank of 280+ questions. See the full INI SS pattern for Stage II and the merit lists.

How to prepare for INI SS Medicine

  1. Work the PYQ bank for your DM first. It shows how the speciality questions are pitched; do it untimed, with explanations, and bookmark every miss.
  2. Keep General Medicine in rotation. Questions on the basics share the paper, so revise them alongside your speciality rather than after it.
  3. Read the landmark trials and recent guidelines for your speciality; they are a favourite source of the hardest questions.
  4. Practise at about 67 seconds a question with timed mocks, and attempt only what you can narrow down: at −1/3 a blind guess gains nothing on average.
  5. If you want AIIMS or PGIMER, prepare for Stage II: clinical or lab scenarios, spotting of ECGs, images and reports, and a short viva.

Which feeder degrees can apply for DM Cardiology through INI SS?

It depends on the institute. For the January 2027 session: AIIMS accepts MD/DNB Medicine or Paediatrics, PGIMER MD Medicine, and JIPMER MD/DNB General Medicine, Paediatrics or Pulmonary Medicine. Check each course in the prospectus.

Do I need to revise General Medicine for INI SS?
